Delaware’s Virginia loss leaves Minicucci’s status uncertain
The Blue Hens managed 160 yards in a 42–3 defeat, with quarterback Nick Minicucci leaving with a knee injury before their scheduled Conference USA opener against Liberty.
Delaware’s 42–3 loss to Virginia in Charlottesville on 26 September exposed a wide gap in performance and left the Blue Hens facing uncertainty over quarterback Nick Minicucci’s fitness. Coach Ryan Carty said after the game he did not know the extent of the knee injury.
Minicucci was hurt while sliding during a second-period run. He had completed four of eight passes before leaving. Delaware’s only points came from Tucker Smack’s 39-yard field goal, and the team finished with 160 total yards.
The injury came amid a difficult offensive night. Braden Streeter completed two of 16 passes in relief, while Riley Trujillo completed one of three on the final series. Delaware also conceded eight penalties for 71 yards.
Virginia recorded 556 yards, including 437 passing. Carty said Virginia had outplayed Delaware in nearly every aspect and that his team needed to take responsibility for the result.
Delaware is scheduled to host Liberty on 2 October in its Conference USA opener. Minicucci’s availability for that game is unconfirmed.
