Dakar residents and students prepare school for new year

Students, teachers, environmental organisation members and residents cleaned Medina Gounass Elementary School in Dakar on Saturday, preparing the site ahead of the 2026–27 school year.

Participants swept classrooms, cleared drains and collected plastic and household waste. Al Jazeera Global News reported that staff were due back on Monday and students on Tuesday.

Organisers said the cleanup was intended to prepare the school for reopening and raise awareness of environmental protection and shared responsibility for public spaces.

Medina Gounass is a densely populated Dakar suburb where waste management and blocked drainage are persistent problems, according to the report. These can worsen during the rainy season, alongside pressure from overcrowded classrooms.
