Cyborg retains PFL title, leaves future in limbo after decision win
The most decorated female fighter in history secured her 30th professional victory at PFL Tampa, extending her winning streak to 10 bouts while questioning whether she will return for another defence.
Cris Cyborg has retained her PFL women’s featherweight title, but the outcome has left the sport’s most decorated female fighter in a state of uncertainty regarding her future. At PFL Tampa, held at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida, Cyborg defeated Ketlen Vieira via unanimous decision to secure her first title defence under the PFL banner.
The bout proceeded despite a significant scale blunder by Vieira, which initially rendered her ineligible to win the championship. Although the administrative error threatened to complicate the title status, the judges scored the fight in Cyborg’s favour with cards of 49-46, 48-47, and 49-46. This victory marks Cyborg’s 30th professional win and extends her winning streak to 10 consecutive fights.
In the cage, Vieira was the aggressor, keeping Cyborg on the outside and dictating the pace for much of the contest. However, Cyborg’s higher volume of attacks influenced the judges’ scoring. Vieira landed a clean punch in the closing moments of the second round that buckled Cyborg, but the veteran champion responded with effective leg kicks, body punches, and takedowns.
The final round saw both fighters trade blows on the mat, with Vieira maintaining top position for significant periods. Despite finding herself on the bottom after a reversal, Cyborg managed to kick off and return to her feet, ending the evening in a heated exchange. The unanimous decision avoided a potential title dispute that would have arisen had Cyborg lost the bout.
Post-fight, Cyborg expressed mixed signals about her career trajectory. This contest was the final fight on her current PFL contract, and she had previously spoken about walking away from the sport. However, during her interview, she left the door open for further fights and specifically called out Kayla Harrison, who was in attendance at the event.
For Vieira, the result continues a recent trend of trading wins and losses over her last seven bouts. Her previous back-to-back victories came against former UFC champions Miesha Tate and Holly Holm in 2021 and 2022. The event also featured other notable results, including Gadzhi Rabadanov defeating Tracy Reeder via TKO in the first round and Luke Trainer defeating Roland Dunlap via TKO in the second round.
