Curacao secures historic World Cup 2026 berth after unbeaten qualifying campaign
Following a dramatic final round where a VAR overturn secured their spot, the 150,000-strong Caribbean island nation will open their campaign against Germany.
Curacao has qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the smallest nation in history to compete at the tournament. The Caribbean island, with a population of approximately 150,000, finished their qualification campaign unbeaten, winning seven of their ten matches. They will join Group E alongside Germany, Ecuador, and Ivory Coast.
The tournament is scheduled to commence on 11 June in North America. Curacao, located 60km off the coast of Venezuela with Willemstad as its capital, endured two challenging rounds of CONCACAF qualifiers to secure their maiden World Cup ticket. In the second round, the team defeated Barbados, Aruba, Saint Lucia, and Haiti, scoring 15 goals to remain undefeated.
The final qualification round proved decisive in securing their place. Playing in Group B alongside Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Bermuda, Curacao drew 0-0 with Trinidad and Tobago and thrashed Bermuda 7-0. A dramatic penalty decision awarded to Jamaica in stoppage time against their final opponent was overturned by VAR, resulting in a goalless draw that secured the top spot in Group B and sealed qualification.
The squad is composed largely of players with Dutch heritage, including Juninho Bacuna and Tahith Chong, with Chong being the only player born on the island. Curacao's FIFA ranking has risen significantly from 150th to 82nd since the nation began competing as a distinct entity in international competition after 2010.
Veteran Dutch coach Dick Advocaat has been reinstated as head coach after initially stepping down four months prior due to his daughter's ill health. Following calls from players and sponsors, Advocaat returned to the role on May 11, making him the oldest manager in World Cup history. He previously stepped aside to allow Fred Rutten to lead the team, but Rutten subsequently resigned to protect the squad's professional environment.
The opening match awaits against four-time champions Germany, with all group games to be played in the US. While the Germans remain favourites to top the group, the Blue Wave has scored 28 goals in ten matches while conceding just five during their qualifying journey, setting a determined tone for their debut at the global stage.
