Commanders defence finds balance between physicality and big-play vulnerability
Washington’s defensive unit recorded the league’s most tackles for loss in Week 1, yet struggled to contain explosive plays in a narrow defeat to the Eagles.

Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Daronte Jones has identified a critical gap in his unit’s performance following a 24-22 Week 1 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles. In his first NFL game in the role, Jones acknowledged that while the defence displayed significant physicality, it failed to limit the long runs and passes that proved decisive in the close contest.
The defensive scheme prioritised pressure at the line of scrimmage, resulting in 10 tackles for a loss, the highest total in the National Football League for the week. This aggressive approach yielded immediate stops, with the Eagles’ first two drives ending in punts and the second half commencing with three consecutive three-and-outs forced by the Commanders.
However, the trade-off for this intensity was an inability to contain explosive plays. The defence surrendered runs of 42 and 22 yards, along with passes of 64, 43, and 31 yards. Jones noted that the game was ultimately decided by these "chunk plays," highlighting a need for improved down-and-distance awareness and disciplined rush lanes.
Specific breakdowns, including a slow start on a play that resulted in a touchdown and a 22-yard run by Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts on a third-and-18 situation, underscored the unit’s struggles in finishing plays. Hurts also completed six of nine passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns on throws of 10 or more air yards.
Jones described the effort as a solid start, emphasising that the players executed the plan with energy. Nevertheless, he stressed that the team must assume nothing and focus on finishing plays to correct these deficiencies.
The Commanders face a challenging test next against the Dallas Cowboys, a team that defeated them 44-22 in the previous season. In that matchup, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott threw three touchdown passes for 264 yards, while receivers George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb accumulated 110 and 82 receiving yards respectively. Jones and his secondary will need to generate consistent pressure to contain that offensive unit.
