The Indianapolis Colts’ cornerback depth was placed under immediate scrutiny during a joint practice with the New England Patriots on Tuesday. With starter Charvarius Ward sidelined, the team’s secondary rotation was forced to absorb significant workload, exposing both vulnerabilities and strengths within the defensive backfield.
According to observations reported by the Indy Star’s Joel Erickson, the unit faced stiff testing from opposing receivers AJ Brown and Mack Hollins. Mekhi Blackmon emerged as the primary defender tasked with containing the big-play threats, though he was also responsible for a busted coverage on a separate play, underscoring the high stakes of the session.
Other depth players encountered notable difficulties. Cam Taylor-Britt, who has been praised for a strong training camp thus far, was reported to be giving up plays while shifting between outside and nickel cornerback positions. Jaylon Jones also faced issues during the practice, adding to the concerns regarding the group’s overall cohesion in Ward’s absence.
Amidst the challenges, Sauce Gardner provided a positive signal for the coaching staff. Erickson noted that Gardner acquitted himself well against Brown, offering a stabilising presence in the secondary. His performance stood in contrast to the struggles faced by his teammates, highlighting the uneven nature of the depth chart’s performance.
Defensive production was not entirely absent, however. Cam Bynum recorded an interception, demonstrating the potential for turnover generation within the group. Erickson further noted that Justin Walley and Jonathan Owens were in positions to secure two additional interceptions, suggesting that despite the coverage lapses, the players remain capable of making game-changing plays.
The joint practice served as a critical evaluation point for the Colts’ defensive strategy. With Ward unavailable, the performance of the remaining cornerbacks will likely influence roster decisions and positional assignments as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
