'Blessing in disguise': Anthony Richardson shows renewed appreciation for Colts despite trade request
Quarterback navigates depth-chart uncertainty as Indianapolis pivots to Daniel Jones and rookie Riley Leonard

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has publicly shifted his tone regarding his future with the franchise, describing his participation in voluntary Organised Team Activities (OTAs) as a "blessing in disguise." The statement marks a significant pivot from February, when Richardson formally requested a trade. Speaking to the Indianapolis Star, Richardson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue working within the NFL system, noting that the organisation allowed him to remain in camp despite his earlier demands.

The Colts have since re-signed Daniel Jones to avoid the transition tag following the quarterback’s Achilles injury last season and are actively developing 2025 draft pick Riley Leonard. This strategic move effectively positions Richardson as a depth option while the franchise maintains its willingness to entertain trade offers if a suitable partner emerges. Richardson, selected fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft out of the University of Florida, is in the final year of his rookie contract after the team declined his fifth-year option.

Richardson’s tenure with the Colts has been characterised by inconsistency. Over three seasons, he holds an 8-7 record in 15 starts. His 2024 campaign saw him throw for 1,814 yards with eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions, alongside 499 rushing yards and six scores. However, turnover issues persisted, with Richardson fumbling seven times. His career completion rate stands at 50.6%, a figure that has raised concerns among the front office regarding his ability to execute rhythm-based efficiency in Shane Steichen’s offensive system.

The franchise’s record since drafting Richardson is 25-26, with no postseason appearances. Indianapolis started the 2025 campaign 7-1, marking their best eight-game stretch since 2009, but collapsed after Jones’ injury. Richardson was placed on injured reserve in Week 6 of the previous season due to vision issues stemming from a fractured orbital bone but is now reported to be at full strength. He is currently focused on battling for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.

While Richardson aims to provide value through improved decision-making and quick-game concepts, the Colts have not received solid trade offers. Concerns remain regarding his ability to evolve into a high-volume passer capable of winning from the pocket in critical situations against structured defences. For now, Richardson is concentrating on his immediate opportunity, stating he wants to constantly think about his position in the league and take advantage of the work he is being allowed to do.
