Coleman secures major deal with Texas following Auburn exit
The University of Texas has secured the services of Cam Coleman, who cited coaching instability at Auburn and the opportunity to play with Arch Manning as key factors in his decision.
Five-star wide receiver Cam Coleman has transferred from Auburn to the University of Texas, signing a compensation package reportedly valued at a minimum of $3 million. The move, finalised on 11 January, marks the end of a high-profile recruitment period that saw the Alabama native evaluate several major programmes before committing to the Longhorns.
Coleman entered the transfer portal in January, a decision influenced by the dismissal of Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze in November 2025 and subsequent instability at the quarterback position. Sources indicate that Coleman’s primary objectives were securing elite quarterback play and remaining within the Southeastern Conference. He spent two seasons at Auburn with inconsistent passing production, including a sophomore year where three different players started at quarterback.
The University of Texas intensified its pursuit of Coleman after losing starting receivers D’Andre Moore Jr. and Parker Livingstone to the portal. Texas offered Coleman the opportunity to pair with Arch Manning, a quarterback considered a potential first overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. This alignment addressed Coleman’s stated priority for high-level quarterback stability as he enters his final year of college eligibility ahead of NFL Draft consideration.
Coleman’s recruitment process involved visits to Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Alabama. Texas A&M maintained historical ties to the prospect, including a prior high school commitment and a relationship with offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins. However, Texas ultimately separated itself from the field, with sources noting that Coleman received offers from multiple schools, with at least one reportedly reaching $4 million.
During the Texas offseason, Coleman has undergone a significant physical transformation, adding muscle mass while retaining his speed. A source described the change as a shift from a lean frame to a more built physique comparable to NFL veteran Julio Jones. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has praised Coleman’s skillset, noting the receiver’s ability to make spectacular catches and address the team’s previous inconsistencies, including a national ranking of 80th in drop percentage last season.
