Cole Allen enters not guilty plea in attempted assassination case against Trump

Cole Allen, a thirty-one-year-old Californian, appeared in Washington federal court on Monday to enter a not guilty plea to all charges related to his alleged attempt to assassinate President Donald Trump. The proceedings took place before US District Judge Trevor McFadden, who is set to preside over the remainder of the case. Allen did not address the court personally; instead, his attorney, Tezira Abe, formally entered the plea on his behalf.

The charges brought against Allen include attempted assassination of the president, assault on a federal officer, and firearms offences. Prosecutors allege that on 25 April, Allen fired a shotgun at a Secret Service agent and breached security at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Federal investigators have confirmed the gunman's intent was to assassinate the President and top officials, an incident that has placed White House security protocols under increased scrutiny.

Allen allegedly travelled to Washington by train carrying a shotgun, a pistol, and knives, and secured accommodation at the Washington Hilton where the gala was held. During the court appearance, he wore an orange jumpsuit and was shackled at the waist. It was noted that a different judge had previously apologised to Allen for his treatment in a local Washington, DC jail, where he was reportedly placed on suicide precautions and isolated from other inmates.

The primary focus of the current legal proceedings is the defence's motion to disqualify acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and US Attorney Jeanine Pirro from the case. Allen's legal team, represented by attorney Eugene Ohm, argues that both officials should be recused because they were present at the dinner and may have been among the alleged targets of the attack.

Attorney Ohm stated that it is wholly inappropriate for victims of an alleged event to be individually prosecuting the case. The defence further contends that Pirro's friendship with Trump constitutes a conflict of interest, suggesting the entire US Attorney's Office in Washington should be disqualified. Pirro has previously stated that her ability to prosecute the case is unrelated to her presence at the event.

Prosecutors are scheduled to respond to the defence's filing by 22 May. The outcome of this motion remains pending as the legal battle shifts from the initial charges to questions of judicial impartiality and the administration of justice within the US Attorney's Office.
