Civilian toll rises as Russia and Ukraine trade fresh overnight strikes

Russia and Ukraine have engaged in a fresh exchange of strikes overnight, marking a continuation of hostilities that have resulted in mounting civilian casualties on both sides. The latest escalation follows a deadly weekend of attacks, with Moscow directing strikes against the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, as well as the southern regions of Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk.
In response to the Russian offensive, Ukraine’s military launched a drone attack targeting Russia’s Voronezh region. The retaliatory strike was part of a broader effort to disrupt Russian military logistics and infrastructure, as the conflict continues to spread across contested borders.
The intensity of the Russian strikes caused significant collateral damage within Ukrainian urban centres. Falling debris from the attacks set fire to a Wildberries warehouse, highlighting the vulnerability of civilian infrastructure to aerial bombardment. The incident underscores the ongoing risks faced by commercial and residential sites in areas under frequent fire.
Ukraine’s military also reported striking a Russian oil refinery in Orsk, a claim that adds to the list of cross-border retaliatory actions. While the Ukrainian military asserts the success of the strike, independent verification of the damage remains pending, as is typical in the information war surrounding the conflict.
The current wave of violence comes in the wake of earlier attacks on 11 August 2026, where Russian forces utilised missile and drone swarms against Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky alleged that the assault on Zaporizhzhia involved North Korean ballistic missiles and Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles, alongside guided aerial bombs.
Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov reported that the earlier strikes on Zaporizhzhia resulted in at least five deaths and 20 injuries, with a separate incident injuring nine others. Fires broke out in warehouses in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivsky district, and industrial and residential sites in Zaporizhzhia were damaged.
As the exchange of fire continues, the humanitarian situation remains precarious. The climbing casualty figures and the targeting of civilian infrastructure point to a deepening crisis, with little sign of a diplomatic resolution in the immediate future.
