Chelsea star Estevao ruled out for remainder of 2026 season amid World Cup uncertainty
The absence of the Brazilian winger compounds squad concerns ahead of the upcoming tournament in North America, with teammate Rodrygo also unavailable.

Chelsea interim coach Calum McFarlane has confirmed that forward Estevao will miss the remainder of the 2026 season following a hamstring injury sustained during a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United. The 19-year-old winger was substituted after just 16 minutes of play and has subsequently missed Chelsea's 3-0 loss to Brighton.
McFarlane stated that there is currently no recovery timeframe available for the player, describing the situation as really unfortunate given the talent and youth involved. This lack of a medical timeline casts significant doubt on Estevao's participation in the upcoming World Cup, which is scheduled to begin on 11 June in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The injury adds further strain to Brazil's squad preparations, as Real Madrid winger Rodrygo remains unavailable due to a torn ACL and meniscus in his right knee. Former coach Liam Rosenior noted that Estevao was in tears when he was taken off the pitch, highlighting the emotional impact of the blow on the young player.
Estevao, who joined Chelsea from Palmeiras last year, has scored eight goals this season and was previously expected to feature in Carlo Ancelotti's World Cup squad after a prolific run in international fixtures. His absence removes a key attacking option ahead of Brazil's opening match against Morocco at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on 13 June.
At the club level, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro are identified as potential replacements as they continue their own recovery processes. Chelsea faces Leeds in the FA Cup semifinals on Sunday, while the club navigates these personnel challenges without a clear return date for Estevao.
