As Chelsea begin their pre-season tour in Sydney, Xabi Alonso confirms he has a specific strategy to integrate Morgan Rogers alongside Cole Palmer, while the club prepares to announce the £52m signing of Maxence Lacroix.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed he has a specific tactical plan to play club record signing Morgan Rogers alongside Cole Palmer. Alonso, who officially commenced his four-year tenure on 1 July following the appointment announced after Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final, described the pairing as a central component of his strategy to improve the squad's competitiveness.
Rogers, who joined from Aston Villa for a British-record £117m, is currently on holiday after representing England at the World Cup and has not yet participated in Chelsea’s pre-season training in Sydney. Despite this absence, Alonso expressed confidence that the 24-year-old midfielder will make an "instant impact" and adapt quickly to the club's system. Rogers has signed a six-year contract with an option for a further year.
Alonso highlighted the existing relationship between Rogers and Palmer, noting that the two England internationals are close friends. "I have a plan. I have an idea. I can see them linking really well," Alonso said. He emphasised the need for a good mix of players who can provide control and balance, stating that getting these special players in the right positions is crucial for performance with and without the ball.
The Blues are also expected to announce the signing of defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52m. If completed, the 26-year-old would be Chelsea’s oldest signing since 2022. Alonso indicated that the club is in talks regarding other potential additions, including set-piece specialist MacPhee, while also highlighting recent acquisitions such as winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting, striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, and full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
With the squad size nearing 40 players, Alonso acknowledged that substantial sales will be required before the transfer window closes. He stressed the need for flexibility and quick action, noting that while the club has a clear plan, the squad composition will likely change. Alonso described the current energy within the team as a positive foundation for the new season, aiming for a balance between quality and mentality.
