Chelsea breaks British transfer record with £117m Morgan Rogers signing
The 23-year-old’s move surpasses the previous mark held by Elliot Anderson, though it remains below the all-time Premier League record set by Alexander Isak.
Chelsea has completed the signing of England forward Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal reported to be worth 117 million pounds ($156.5m), establishing a new British transfer record. The 23-year-old has signed a contract with the London club until 2033, marking a significant shift in squad composition under new manager Xabi Alonso.
The transfer fee exceeds the previous British record of 116 million pounds ($155m) set by Elliot Anderson’s move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City earlier this month. It also surpasses Chelsea’s prior club record of 115 million pounds ($150m) paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023. The all-time Premier League transfer record remains held by Alexander Isak’s 125 million pounds ($167m) move from Newcastle to Liverpool.
Rogers becomes the third major off-season signing for Alonso, following the arrivals of Marco Palestra and Geovany Quenda. The forward arrives with recent international experience, having featured for England in the 2026 World Cup where the team finished third after losing to Argentina in the semi-finals. He scored 21 goals in 85 Premier League appearances for Aston Villa, helping the club secure a top-four finish and the Europa League title last season.
The deal highlights a broader trend at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea has invested heavily in players from the Manchester City academy. Rogers joins Cole Palmer and Liam Delap in a squad reshaping that has seen nearly 300 million pounds spent on City graduates since 2023. Middlesbrough, Rogers’ former club, will receive a portion of the fee due to a 20% sell-on clause attached to their 8 million pounds acquisition of him in February 2024.
Chelsea, who finished 10th in the Premier League last season, are now focused on integrating their new signings ahead of the league campaign. The club begins their season away to Fulham on August 24, with Rogers expressing excitement about the project and the direction of the club under Alonso’s tenure.
