The sports editor for the Cheboygan Daily Tribune has published a retrospective list of the 11 most impressive male athletes he has covered since commencing his role in 2010, highlighting achievements across high school and collegiate levels.

Jared Greenleaf, sports editor for the Cheboygan Daily Tribune, has compiled a retrospective selection of the 11 most impressive male athletes he has covered during his 15-plus-year tenure in the Cheboygan area. The list, published recently, recognises individuals from various local high schools and their subsequent collegiate careers, spanning multiple sports including football, golf, soccer, and baseball.
Greenleaf began his role as sports editor in 2010, a period he describes as a significant professional milestone. The selection includes Damon Proctor, Christopher Hass, Aidan Fenstermaker, P.J. Maybank III, Luke Munger, Stan Swiderek, Aaron Chatfield, Connor Wallace, Lars Huffman, Jager Mix, and Blake Cassidy. The athletes represent schools such as Cheboygan, Pellston, Inland Lakes, Mackinaw City, and Onaway, with some also representing Burt Lake NMCA.
Among the notable achievements highlighted is that of Aidan Fenstermaker from Inland Lakes, who Greenleaf describes as the most dynamic football player he has covered. In his senior season in 2024, Fenstermaker recorded 1,612 rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns, alongside 944 passing yards and 20 passing touchdowns. He also earned all-state baseball and basketball honours before signing with Alma College for football.
Other standout performances include those of P.J. Maybank III, who won the MHSAA Division 3 individual state title in golf in 2021 while representing Cheboygan. Maybank is currently entering his fourth season at the University of Oklahoma. Similarly, Luke Munger, also from Cheboygan, earned 2024 all-state first-team honours as an offensive and defensive lineman and is in his second season at Northwood University.
The list also recognises record-breaking achievements in other disciplines. Aaron Chatfield of Burt Lake NMCA holds MHSAA records for single-season goals (68 in 2012), career goals (201), and career points (296). Connor Wallace from Inland Lakes recorded a 0.479 ERA with 144 strikeouts in his senior baseball season, while Christopher Hass of Pellston averaged 27.7 points per game in his senior year before earning all-Patriot League honours at Bucknell University.
Additional athletes on the list include Stan Swiderek, a multi-sport standout pivotal to Cheboygan’s first regional hockey crown in 2012; Lars Huffman, who runs for St. Norbert College; Jager Mix, who signed with Alpena Community College; and Blake Cassidy, who signed with Lake Superior State University. Damon Proctor is noted for his collegiate success at the University of Northwestern Ohio, where he finished with a 13-0 record and a 1.50 earned run average.
The publication serves as a summary of Greenleaf’s observations since starting his job in 2010, acknowledging the evolution of local sports talent over more than a decade and a half. The athletes selected represent a cross-section of excellence in the region’s secondary and tertiary sporting institutions.
