ChatGPT, Claude and other AI chatbots arrive on Apple CarPlay
Engadget reports that several chatbot apps can now be used through voice commands in CarPlay, with significant limits on navigation and vehicle controls.
ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok are available through Apple CarPlay, according to Engadget, provided users have a compatible iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later and the latest versions of the relevant apps.
The services are designed for voice-only use while driving. Users open the relevant app in CarPlay to start a new conversation or resume an existing one, rather than using a wake word. The apps require an internet connection and may stop working when connectivity is weak or unavailable.
The chatbots can offer suggestions, including ideas for places to visit or activities at a destination, but they generally cannot provide real-time navigation, access other apps or control vehicle functions. Engadget reports that Siri AI, available on supported iPhones running iOS 27, can use Apple Maps.
Availability and features may change with future software and app updates. Voice recognition also depends on the vehicle’s microphones and surrounding noise, which can affect how well the services understand commands.
AI responses may be inaccurate, and conversations can distract drivers. The services should not be relied on for safety-critical decisions, and Engadget suggests using them while parked if noise or other conditions make interaction difficult.
