Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu is entering the final year of his rookie contract with no extension agreement in place, casting a shadow over his availability as training camp approaches. With the team facing a crucial season, the status of a player who delivered a Pro Bowl performance in 2025 has become a central narrative heading into pre-season preparations.
Daniel Popper of The Athletic has identified Tuipulotu’s participation status as one of the most significant storylines for the upcoming camp. The question of whether the 23-year-old will practice has gained traction as contract extension talks have remained ongoing for the most part between the player and the organisation, with no final deal secured.
The prospect of a "hold-in" tactic has been raised as a viable strategy for Tuipulotu to exert leverage during negotiations. This approach allows players to report to camp to avoid fines for non-reporting, while subsequently sitting out practices to maintain pressure on the club. It is a method previously utilised by Chargers personnel, including Khalil Mack in 2022 and Slater the previous year.
Tuipulotu has offered limited clarity on his intentions, stating only that "time will tell" when asked about the possibility of a hold-in prior to the summer break. His absence would not be ideal for the Chargers, who require high-level performance from key contributors to navigate the season effectively.
The 2023 second-round pick has improved annually since entering the league, culminating in a standout 2025 campaign where he recorded 13 sacks, 49 total tackles, 20 tackles for loss, and 23 quarterback hits. The Chargers view him as a key performer with a strong chance to establish himself as the No. 1 edge rusher, particularly with Khalil Mack aging and rookie Akheem Mesidor on the depth chart.
