Chargers Torch 49ers: 4 Takeaways From San Francisco-Los Angeles Joint Practice
New scheme shows promise for Herbert, but Biadasz injury raises questions for offensive line depth

The Los Angeles Chargers’ new offensive scheme under coordinator Mike McDaniel was on full display during a joint practice against the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday, with quarterback Justin Herbert executing the system with significant impact. Held at the Chargers’ headquarters in El Segundo, California, the session saw Herbert connect on key plays with receivers Quentin Johnston and Ladd McConkey, tight end David Njoku, and running back Omarion Hampton.

Conversely, the San Francisco 49ers’ offence struggled to find rhythm. Quarterback Brock Purdy acknowledged that his unit fell short, attributing the underperformance to issues with fundamentals and a lack of intensity. Purdy stated that while there were positive elements, the team needed to approach the game with greater determination, admitting it was not their best day of preparation.

Despite the offensive success for Los Angeles, the practice was marred by injury to starting centre Tyler Biadasz. The free-agent acquisition was carted off the field with a leg injury after left guard Kayode Awosika threw an opponent into Biadasz’s leg. Rookie second-round pick Jake Slaughter, who had been competing for a left guard role, stepped in to replace Biadasz in the starting lineup.

The absence of Biadasz presents a potential vulnerability for the Chargers’ offensive line, which already faced significant challenges last season without bookend tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt. Slater has missed over a week of training camp with a leg injury, with Trey Pipkins starting in his place. Losing the anchor at centre would further strain a unit that is already managing multiple personnel issues.

Other players also exited the session with injuries. Wide receiver Quentin Johnston left practice with a right leg injury sustained while diving out of bounds; he was evaluated by medical staff and returned to the field but did not participate further. On the San Francisco side, tight end Mike Evans exited due to quad tightness and was seen icing the injury, while wide receiver Christian Kirk remains sidelined with a calf issue.

The practice was described as highly competitive but controlled, with no altercations reported. This stands in contrast to the 49ers’ previous joint session against the Tennessee Titans, which was noted for being feisty and involving fights. The Chargers are entering training camp with expectations of early success, though the franchise has a historical tendency to struggle in the December and January periods.
