CF Montreal appoints Alexis Sanchez as designated player amid structural roster shift

CF Montreal has formalised the signing of 37-year-old Chilean international Alexis Sanchez on a designated player contract, a strategic roster adjustment that signals a shift in the club’s personnel policy. The agreement covers the remainder of the 2026 season and the 2027 sprint season, with a club option to extend the arrangement through the 2027-28 campaign.
The appointment of Sanchez represents a significant structural change for the club, which previously maintained a roster without any designated players. Under Major League Soccer regulations, designated player slots allow teams to sign high-profile talent without the full salary charge impacting the team’s salary cap, with each club permitted up to three such allocations.
Luca Saputo, CF Montreal’s Senior Director of Recruitment and Sporting Methodology, described the acquisition as a pivotal element of the club’s sporting project. Saputo cited Sanchez’s technical quality and leadership as factors aligning with the club’s identity, asserting a belief that the forward would deliver an immediate impact on the field and within the locker room.
Sanchez brings extensive experience from top-tier European competitions, including a La Liga title with FC Barcelona and victories in the 2015 and 2016 Copa América tournaments with Chile. His career path has included tenures at Arsenal, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Marseille, Udinese, and most recently Sevilla, where he recorded four goals in 30 matches during the previous season.
The signing occurs against a backdrop of challenging results for Montreal, who currently sit 14th in the 15-team Eastern Conference with four wins, ten defeats, and four draws from 18 matches. The club remains active in the Canadian Championship semifinals, where they face the Vancouver Whitecaps in a two-legged tie that offers a route to the Concacaf Champions Cup.
The timing of the contract extension option coincides with a major logistical shift in MLS, as the 2027-28 season will be the first to operate on a summer-to-spring calendar. While the specific financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the club’s willingness to utilise a designated player slot suggests a renewed focus on competitive positioning in the latter stages of the current campaign and beyond.
