'We've made so many memories.' Center Grove softball falls one step short of state
Class 4A Trojans fall 6-2, capping 23-7 campaign with runner-up finish from last year

The Center Grove softball team’s pursuit of a second consecutive state finals appearance concluded on Saturday night with a 6-2 loss to Terre Haute North in the Class 4A semistate championship match. The defeat eliminates the Trojans from the tournament, ending a season that saw the team finish with a 23-7 record.

Terre Haute North secured the victory largely through the performance of pitcher Jaleigh Lindley, who worked seven innings to secure the win. Lindley allowed two runs on five hits while recording seven strikeouts and issuing two walks. Her command, particularly with her rise ball, disrupted Center Grove’s offensive rhythm throughout the contest.

The Patriots’ defense complemented Lindley’s pitching with several critical plays. In the fourth inning, catcher Marci Parker executed a strikeout followed by a double play, while right fielder Kambry Sparks made a diving catch to preserve the lead. Additional defensive efforts in the sixth inning, including back-to-back strikeouts by Lindley and a diving play by shortstop Kenzie Zigler, helped strand runners and maintain Terre Haute North’s advantage.

Center Grove’s Class of 2026 compiled a four-year record of 96-24, achieving a winning percentage of 0.800. The group’s trajectory includes a sectional loss in 2023, a return to the state semifinals the following year, and a runner-up finish in the 4A state championship game last spring. Head coach Alyssa Coleman highlighted the team’s resilience and the strong interpersonal bonds formed through their shared experiences, noting the emotional weight of the season’s conclusion.

Senior outfielder Kiersten Hardin, along with teammates Brynn Meyer, Erica Burris, and Riley Fuhr, reflected on the camaraderie developed since childhood. Junior Taylor Barrett, an Indiana University commit, emphasised the lasting friendships forged through the sport. Despite the early-season struggles that saw the team start 6-5, the group rallied to achieve significant success, with Coleman expressing pride in their contributions both on the field and in their relationships.
