What increase in back-to-backs means for 2026-27 Celtics
Increased fixture congestion coincides with roster overhaul following Jaylen Brown trade

The Boston Celtics’ 2026-27 regular season schedule reveals a marked increase in fixture congestion, with the team set to play 16 back-to-back games. This total exceeds the league average by approximately two matches and represents a three-game rise from their 2025-26 campaign. The Celtics have not faced this volume of consecutive games since the 2016-17 season, when they played 17.

The shift in scheduling density has drawn speculation regarding the NBA’s allocation methods. While the league’s scheduling mechanics remain opaque, the change may reflect a correction in fortune after years of favourable fixtures. Alternatively, it may signal a reduction in the Celtics’ standing within the Eastern Conference following the trade of star guard Jaylen Brown. In contrast, the Philadelphia 76ers, who acquired Brown and LeBron James this offseason, saw their back-to-back count decrease from 16 to 13.

Despite the increased difficulty, the Celtics remain a priority for national exposure. The schedule includes 27 nationally televised games, an increase of two from the previous year. However, the volume suggests the league is less eager to spotlight the New England franchise than in prior seasons, even as it maintains a presence in the market.

The physical toll of the schedule poses specific risks for Boston’s core and new acquisitions. Jayson Tatum is recovering from an Achilles tear and missed Game 7 of the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs due to knee stiffness. The team may need to manage his load, potentially forcing him to sit out both legs of back-to-back fixtures.

New signings Paul George and Mitchell Robinson face integration challenges under the heavier schedule. George, aged 36, has missed more than half of a regular season since the 2023-24 campaign due to injury, while Robinson has a history of missing time. Five of the 16 back-to-backs are scheduled for November, a period critical for establishing team chemistry.

To mitigate the impact of potential absences, Boston has bolstered its bench depth with players such as Luka Garza, Jordan Walsh, and Baylor Scheierman. Head coach Joe Mazzulla has previously expressed a willingness to embrace difficult scheduling stretches, stating in December 2024 that he finds the hard parts of the season “fun” and is “excited” by the challenge.
