Oklahoma secures B.J. Edwards amid eligibility ruling

Oklahoma men’s basketball has signed former SMU guard B.J. Edwards, a move that provides the Sooners with a significant piece for the 2026-27 season. The signing follows a court ruling in Tennessee that granted Edwards a fifth year of eligibility, resolving the status of the Knoxville native who spent three seasons with the Mustangs after his freshman year at Tennessee.
Edwards, standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 200 pounds, started the first 28 games for SMU last season before an injury ended his campaign. During that period, he averaged 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game. His performance included three instances where he recorded at least 20 points, five rebounds, five assists, and five steals, a statistical feat that made him the only player nationally to achieve this triple-double-adjacent milestone on three separate occasions.
While awaiting the outcome of the eligibility proceedings in Tennessee, Edwards signed a contract with the Sacramento Kings and participated in the NBA Summer League. He appeared in five games during the summer circuit, averaging 2.4 points. The timing of his transfer coincides with SMU’s exclusion from the NCAA Tournament, despite the Mustangs’ insistence that Edwards would have been available had they been selected. He did not play in SMU’s subsequent First Four loss to Miami (Ohio).
Edwards joins a Sooners squad that returns double-figure scorers Xzayvier Brown and Derrion Reid. The team is aiming to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament under head coach Porter Moser, who is in his sixth season at Norman. Edwards’ high school career at Knoxville Catholic saw him score 2,240 total points, establishing a strong foundation before his collegiate career began.
The acquisition addresses roster needs as Oklahoma looks to solidify its backcourt depth. Edwards’ experience at both the collegiate and professional summer league levels offers versatility for Moser’s system.
