Celtic’s largest individual shareholder, Dermot Desmond, was escorted off the course by security after tennis balls bearing crossed-out images of his face were thrown towards the 15th-hole green during the Alfred Dunhill Links pro-am in St Andrews.

The Celtic Fans Collective said the protest was intended to challenge Desmond’s leadership and accountability. The group released a statement alongside footage and images of the incident.

Desmond has faced criticism from some supporters over Celtic’s progress in Europe and its transfer business, according to BBC Sport.

Tensions have also surfaced at the club’s annual general meeting. BBC Sport reported that last November’s meeting was abandoned amid fan unrest, with Desmond’s son Ross reading a statement on his behalf.
