Ranking NFL's 12 new coach-QB duos: Where do Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson rank with new coaches?
Analysis of league-wide leadership changes highlights Josh Allen and Sean Payton as the premier pairing

CBS Sports has published a comprehensive ranking of the 12 NFL teams that have either a new head coach, quarterback, or both for the 2026 season. The analysis evaluates these pairings using a methodology consistent with the previous year, focusing on the structural changes across the league’s 32 franchises. The report identifies the Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen and Sean Payton as the top duo, citing Allen’s durability and continuity with the coaching staff as decisive factors over other high-profile combinations.

The Cleveland Browns occupy the lower end of the spectrum, with Josh Watson reportedly emerging as the favourite to start despite recent Achilles injuries and poor statistical performance. The assessment notes that Watson finished last in expected points added per dropback among qualified quarterbacks and has suffered two torn Achilles tendons. The analysis suggests that even with the hiring of pass-game architect Monken, the situation remains precarious, particularly if Shedeur Sanders were to start instead.

In Arizona, the pairing of Drake Maye and head coach Jonathan Gannon faces scrutiny regarding durability and scheme fit. While Maye displayed an explosive skill set as a rookie, concerns persist about his ability to withstand hits. Similarly, the Miami Dolphins’ situation with Drake Maye and head coach Mike McDaniel is viewed with caution, given the lack of talent on both sides of the ball and the absence of Matt LaFleur’s offensive scheming, which previously supported Maye in Green Bay.

The New York Jets’ combination of Aaron Rodgers and Robert Saleh is ranked lower due to Rodgers’ age-43 season and Saleh’s previous struggles as a head coach. The report highlights that Rodgers has been underwhelming in recent seasons, and Saleh’s offensive output has historically been underwhelming, although his defensive units have been consistently excellent. This dynamic is expected to support Rodgers, but the overall projection remains cautious.

Other notable pairings include Lamar Jackson and John Harbaugh in Baltimore, who are ranked second due to Jackson’s health and Harbaugh’s game management, and Kirk Cousins with Kevin O’Connell in Minnesota. The Vikings’ situation is complicated by the expectation that J.J. McCarthy will take over before the season concludes, with Cousins viewed as a temporary starter. The assessment concludes that while the Bills and Ravens offer the most stability, the majority of the 12 teams face significant uncertainty in their new leadership structures.
