10 most important MLB players in June: Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Chourio, Alex Bregman and more
Analysis highlights key performances shaping playoff races and roster moves

CBS Sports has published an analysis identifying ten Major League Baseball players as critical figures for June 2026, focusing on their potential impact on the playoff race and the upcoming trade deadline. The report highlights the performance and status of key athletes, including Tarik Skubal, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Alex Bregman, alongside Paul Goldschmidt, Juan Soto, Jesse Winker, Christian Yelich, Adley Rutschman, Gerrit Cole, and Shohei Ohtani. The assessment centres on recent form, injury recoveries, and how these individuals may influence their respective teams' postseason aspirations.

The Detroit Tigers are currently in a difficult position, sitting 11 and a half games out of first place in the AL Central and seven games out of a wild-card spot after a 4-21 record since May 3. Tarik Skubal, who has won back-to-back Cy Young awards, is recovering from elbow surgery and is expected to return in mid-June. As a free agent unlikely to sign an extension, his return from injury is viewed as a significant factor that could trigger a trade for the struggling franchise.

In San Diego, the Padres are in a playoff position but have struggled offensively. Fernando Tatis Jr. is hitting .266 with a slugging percentage of .318, which is 180 points lower than his career average. Although he hit his first home run of the season recently, the analysis notes that the team requires him to improve his power hitting to support their postseason chances.

The Chicago Cubs are also facing offensive challenges, leading the majors in runners left on base while hitting just .223 with a .346 slugging percentage with runners in scoring position. Alex Bregman, who signed a five-year, $140 million deal with the Cubs, is hitting .259 but has struggled with runners in scoring position. His performance is considered crucial for the team's ability to convert base runners into runs.

Other monitored players include Paul Goldschmidt, Juan Soto, Jesse Winker, Christian Yelich, Adley Rutschman, Gerrit Cole, and Shohei Ohtani. The report emphasises that the next month will help shape the rest of the season, with specific attention paid to injury statuses and recent form as teams approach the trade deadline.
