CBS Sports flags mounting pressure across college football after Week 4

CBS Sports has identified several college football figures facing increased scrutiny after difficult Week 4 results and before challenging games. The outlet’s assessment discusses Texas quarterback Arch Manning, Maryland coach Mike Locksley, South Carolina coach Shane Beamer, Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed and USC coach Lincoln Riley.

Manning completed 17 of 33 passes for 164 yards in Texas’ 30–6 win over UTSA. CBS Sports questioned his consistency ahead of Texas’ trip to Tennessee, which it described as the quarterback’s toughest road fixture so far apart from last year’s game against Ohio State.

Maryland’s 35–26 home loss to Virginia Tech ended a 20-game non-conference winning streak. CBS Sports also noted the team’s eight-game conference losing run and heightened scrutiny on Locksley, whose side is due to host UCLA when Big Ten play begins.

South Carolina surrendered a 16–0 lead before losing 41–34 to Mississippi State. Fans reportedly chanted “Fire Beamer”, while CBS Sports highlighted quarterback LaNorris Sellers’ two interceptions and the Gamecocks’ upcoming visit to Alabama.

Oklahoma beat New Mexico by eight points but averaged 1.9 yards per carry, with John Mateer throwing two interceptions. Arbuckle’s offence now faces No. 2 Georgia, while Texas A&M and Reed travel to LSU after a 31–21 loss to Kentucky. USC remains 4–0 after beating Rutgers 42–35, but Riley’s side faces questions over its pass defence and Big Ten road record before hosting Oregon.
