The Arizona Cardinals have confirmed that rookie quarterback Carson Beck will miss Thursday night’s preseason match against the Las Vegas Raiders due to a rib injury sustained during the Hall of Fame Game. The decision, announced on Wednesday, reflects the team’s cautious approach to managing the third-round draft pick’s availability despite the injury not being classified as serious.
Beck, who attended the University of Miami, practiced through soreness throughout the week leading up to the game. However, head coach Mike LaFleur and the coaching staff opted to err on the side of caution to ensure the rookie’s long-term availability. Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who did not play in the previous Thursday night game, is set to start in Beck’s place.
The sidelining of Beck prevents an anticipated rookie quarterback duel with Fernando Mendoza, who is making his NFL debut for the Raiders. While the matchup had drawn attention, the focus now shifts to Brissett, who will face off against Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins, who is expected to start for Las Vegas.
Beck’s performance in the Hall of Fame Game was statistically strong, completing 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. His first career touchdown was a five-yard pass to Simi Fehoko, while wide receiver Jalen Brooks served as his primary target, catching three passes for 99 yards, including a 49-yard reception.
LaFleur praised Beck’s decision-making during the broadcast, which aired on NBC and was streamed on NFL+ and Peacock. “It’s a broken record, but it’s the same thing I keep seeing in practice,” LaFleur said. “He doesn’t make it too big. He just makes it about the play.”
Barring any setbacks, Beck is expected to return for the Cardinals’ third preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys next Saturday night. The exact timeline for his return beyond that date has not been specified, with the team prioritising his full recovery over immediate game action.
