Cardinals back veteran Brissett with $15.5m extension
Arizona Cardinals leadership prioritises stability and veteran experience over statistical output in retaining quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett has secured a $15.5 million contract extension, finalised in July 2026, which cements his status as the team’s veteran leader. The move signals a clear institutional preference for stability and experience within the locker room, rather than a reliance on raw statistical performance.
General Manager Monti Ossenfort and newly appointed Head Coach Mike LaFleur have indicated that Brissett’s competence and leadership are valued above his on-field numbers. This approach reflects a strategic decision to rebuild team camaraderie during a transitional period for the franchise.
During the 2025 season, Brissett recorded career-high figures, including 3,366 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and a 64.7% completion rate. He also threw eight interceptions. While only 12 NFL quarterbacks had more passing attempts than Brissett, 13 of those players recorded higher passing yardage totals.
Despite the presence of backup options, the organisation views shifting the starting role to reserve Gardner Minshew or rookie Carson Beck as premature. The coaching staff believes that removing Brissett from the starting position would be problematic for the team’s current developmental needs.
The quarterback’s primary target, tight end Trey McBride, contributed significantly to the 2025 campaign, ranking second in the NFL for total receptions and touchdown receptions, and sixth in receiving yards. The Cardinals also expect improved contributions from wide receivers Michael Wilson and Marvin Harrison Jr. to support the offensive structure.
As LaFleur navigates his first stint as head coach, the retention of Brissett is seen as essential for providing resolve and consistency. The franchise is focused on renovating its internal culture, with Brissett’s veteran presence considered central to that process.
