California ex-mayor admits acting as agent of China, US authorities say
Former Arcadia official Eileen Wang admits to operating a pro-Beijing media platform without disclosing ties to Beijing authorities

Eileen Wang, the former mayor of Arcadia, California, has pleaded guilty to one count of acting as an illegal agent of the People's Republic of China between late 2020 and 2022. The admission marks a significant development in the US Department of Justice's ongoing efforts to identify foreign influence operations within American public institutions.

According to prosecutors, Wang operated the US News Center website to disseminate pro-Beijing propaganda while failing to notify US authorities of her relationship with Chinese officials. Her activities included republishing an official essay from the PRC that denied allegations of genocide against the Uighur minority in Xinjiang. This conduct occurred while she held a position of public trust, raising concerns about undisclosed foreign directives influencing local governance.

US Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A Eisenberg expressed deep concern regarding the nature of Wang's undisclosed relationship with the PRC. He emphasised that individuals elected to public office in the United States must act solely for the people they represent, noting it is particularly troubling that such a relationship remained hidden from the public and the government.

Legal representatives for Wang, Brian A Sun and Jason Liang, have stated that the conduct in question relates solely to her personal media platform rather than her actions as an elected official. They described the website as a project run with a man she believed to be her fiancé, Yaoning Sun, who was previously sentenced to four years in prison in October 2025 for similar charges.

Wang resigned from her mayoral office on 12 May 2026 following the guilty plea. She now faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Her lawyers issued a statement apologising for mistakes made in her personal life while asserting that her devotion to the Arcadia community has not wavered.

The case unfolds as the United States and China prepare for a summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping in Beijing. While the two leaders recently agreed to a yearlong pause in their trade war, this prosecution highlights the broader US concern regarding foreign influence operations within domestic media and public life.
