Calafiori’s movement reshapes Arsenal’s left-back role

Riccardo Calafiori’s development from a regular centre-back at Bologna into an influential Arsenal left-back is being driven by the freedom of Mikel Arteta’s tactical system.

Sky Sports reports that Calafiori has opened the season with a goal in Arsenal’s Community Shield win over Manchester City and assists in league victories against Coventry and Aston Villa.

His impact has extended beyond conventional work on the left. Sky Sports analysis says Calafiori regularly moves into central and right-sided attacking positions, with an underlapping run against Chelsea helping create space during Arsenal’s 2-1 win.

Jamie Carragher said Calafiori’s positioning shaped Chelsea’s defensive formation and contributed to the space used by Martin Odegaard for the winning goal. A similar movement was linked to Arsenal’s Community Shield goals against Manchester City.

The role reflects Arsenal’s broader approach to full-backs, with Ben White also given flexible defensive, midfield and attacking responsibilities. Sky Sports says that tactical variety can force opponents into a low defensive block because every attacking player must be tracked.

Carragher’s assessment that Calafiori is “the best left-back in the league by far” remains an opinion rather than a settled statistical conclusion. The evidence presented by Sky Sports, however, points to a defender whose movement is becoming central to Arsenal’s attacking structure.
