The Denver Broncos reportedly explored bringing Drew Brees out of retirement for the AFC Championship after quarterback Bo Nix suffered a season-ending ankle injury during the divisional round.
According to ESPN, cited by CBS Sports, former Broncos offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and offensive assistant Pete Carmichael discussed a possible comeback with Brees, whom they previously worked with in New Orleans.
Brees reportedly wanted to complete a workout before making a decision. The possibility then ended after he experienced wrist discomfort, although the supplied account does not establish that he was offered a formal contract or agreed to return.
Coach Sean Payton, Brees’ former coach at New Orleans, was reportedly unaware of the initial approach and learned about the discussions later. The assistants had reportedly sought to assess Brees’ interest before raising the matter with Payton.
