Brighton comeback sends Manchester United out of League Cup

Manchester United surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3–2 to Brighton on Wednesday, ending their English League Cup campaign at the earliest stage for a second consecutive season.

United struck twice inside the opening 10 minutes, with Shea Lacey and Mason Mount putting the home side 2–0 ahead. Brighton responded through Charalampos Kostoulas before half-time, then completed the comeback after the break.

Pascal Gross equalised in the 65th minute before Maxim De Cuyper scored four minutes later to secure Brighton’s victory. Marcus Rashford had an opportunity to level for United but was unable to beat goalkeeper Jason Steele one-on-one.

Fox Sports reported that boos were heard at Old Trafford after the final whistle. The defeat was United’s third of the season and second in succession, following Sunday’s loss to Manchester City.

The report said United had won two of six matches in all competitions, including one Premier League game. United are due to travel to face Fulham on Sunday.
