Brewers Match Modern-Era Record With 22-0 Rout of Mariners
Three-run home runs from Christian Yelich, David Hamilton, and Luis Lara, alongside a two-run shot by Jake Bauers, powered the Brewers to a historic shutout victory on Tuesday night.
The Milwaukee Brewers matched baseball’s modern-era record for the largest shutout margin on Tuesday night, defeating the Seattle Mariners 22-0. The victory also equaled the franchise record for runs scored in a single game, propelling the Brewers to a major league-best 78-48 record.
The offensive explosion was anchored by three-run home runs from Christian Yelich, David Hamilton, and Luis Lara, complemented by a two-run homer from Jake Bauers. Yelich’s blast in the fifth inning extended the lead to 6-0, while Hamilton’s sixth-inning home run pushed the score to 9-0. Bauers added a two-run shot later in the same inning, bringing the total to 11-0.
Milwaukee’s scoring surge continued in the eighth inning against Mariners infielder Leo Rivas, where the Brewers recorded nine runs. This included Lara’s first career home run. Hamilton finished with a career-high four RBIs, while Yelich and Lara each drove in four runs. Garrett Mitchell contributed four hits to the offensive effort.
Pitching was managed by a five-man rotation that held Seattle to just five hits. Kyle Harrison started, allowing two hits over five innings. He was followed by Shane Drohan, who pitched two innings, Grant Anderson, who handled the eighth, and Gary Sanchez, who completed the shutout in the ninth. Sanchez, making only his third career pitching appearance, threw several pitches under 40 mph while navigating two hits.
The 22-0 score matches only two other victories in Major League Baseball history since 1901: the Pittsburgh Pirates’ win over the Chicago Cubs in 1975 and the Cleveland Indians’ victory against the New York Yankees in 2004. The game was played in front of a crowd of 36,870.
