Bosnia win 3-2, knock out Qatar to keep alive hopes of World Cup round of 32
Group B final match sees 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic shine as Bosnia secure four points

Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated Qatar 3-1 in their final Group B match of the 2026 World Cup, a result that places them in a commanding position to advance as one of the eight best third-placed teams to the Round of 32. The victory moves Bosnia on to four points, keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive for the first time in the nation’s history.

The match opened with Bosnia asserting immediate dominance, testing Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada twice within the first four minutes through strikes from Ermedin Demirovic and Ivan Sunjic. However, the breakthrough came not from veteran captain Edin Dzeko, but from 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic. The teenager scored a long-range strike in the first half, becoming Bosnia’s youngest-ever World Cup player and celebrating by silencing the crowd.

Dzeko, earning his 150th cap, played a pivotal role in extending Bosnia’s lead. His shot deflected off Sultan Albrake and Abunada to find the net, although Dzeko later saw his follow-up effort rebound off the post. Qatar responded late in the first half when Hassan Alhaydos, their most capped player, pulled a goal back with an assist from Edmilson Junior, reducing the deficit to 2-1.

The momentum shifted further in the second half when Alhaydos was substituted in the 55th minute due to injury. Bosnia restored their two-goal cushion in the 80th minute when Ermin Mahmic scored, a goal that followed a deflection and an own goal by Abunada. Mahmic’s strike secured the result, marking his second successive goal for the side.

Qatar exited the tournament at the group stage, failing to progress beyond the initial phase for the second consecutive World Cup, having also been eliminated in this manner when they hosted the 2022 edition. Bosnia’s coach Julen Lopetegui now looks ahead to potential knockout scenarios, with projections suggesting a Round of 32 clash against the United States, who are expected to finish as Group D winners.
