Booneville extends rivalry into volleyball with Prentiss County title

The longstanding competitive history between Baldwyn and Booneville has officially expanded to include volleyball, with the Blue Devils securing the 2026 Prentiss County Tournament championship. Booneville defeated their rivals 2-0 on Saturday afternoon, a result that improved their season record to 12-4 while Baldwyn finished with a 7-7 record. The victory caps a season in which the two teams have met twice, with Booneville also recording a 3-1 win earlier in the year.

The contest was decided in a tightly contested second set that concluded 29-27. Baldwyn, the Bearcats, were within striking distance of forcing a deciding set on multiple occasions. Keniah Burt led Baldwyn to a 24-23 advantage on a kill, and the team regained the lead at 27-26 before Booneville’s Olivia Tunstall tied the score by tapping the ball into no man’s land. Tunstall subsequently blocked Eliza McCarley’s kill attempt to put Booneville ahead 28-27, setting up the final rally which ended when Baldwyn’s attempt landed out of bounds.

Davis Foster emerged as a pivotal figure for Booneville, recording eight kills throughout the match. His performance at the net was instrumental in the opening set, where he blocked a kill attempt by Baldwyn’s Caroline Craven. Foster’s efforts helped Booneville extend their lead to 21-16, a margin that forced a Baldwyn timeout. Although Baldwyn narrowed the gap to 22-21 on a pair of serves from Craven, Foster’s kills ensured Booneville took the first set 25-23.

Baldwyn’s offensive threat was centred on sophomore Caroline Craven, who opened the second set with a powerful kill that helped her team establish a 5-1 lead. Baldwyn coach Mike Frassetto praised his squad’s resilience and commitment, noting that the team never gave up. He highlighted Craven’s continued development, describing her as a great player who has continually improved, while acknowledging the power his team possesses at the net.

First-year Booneville coach Adam Mauney acknowledged the intensity inherent in the rivalry, noting that the players know each other well and are driven to win. Despite the victory, Mauney identified areas for institutional improvement, specifically citing serve-receive as a weakness. He observed that serves were a significant factor in the match’s outcome but expressed confidence that the team’s performance in that area would improve as the season progresses.

The match featured a notable exchange at the net between Tunstall and Burt, with both players recording back-to-back blocks. For Booneville, Hailee Lawless provided 12 assists, while Lauren Tennison contributed seven kills. The result solidifies volleyball as a new dimension of a rivalry that has previously been prominent in other sports, with both coaches and players acknowledging the heightened competitive stakes.
