Blue Origin secures $700 million NASA contract for Mars communications network
The Jeff Bezos-led firm will build a high-performance orbiter to transmit science data and navigation signals for missions to the Red Planet by the end of 2028.

Blue Origin has been awarded a contract worth up to $700 million to develop the Mars Telecommunications Network for the United States space agency. The deal, announced by NASA, tasks the company with creating a high-performance orbiter designed to operate by 31 December 2028.
Once operational, the orbiter will serve as a critical link for spacecraft operating on and around Mars. It is expected to transmit science data, imagery, navigation information, and essential mission communications back to Earth, providing the reliable data flow necessary for future exploration.
This development is a key component of NASA’s broader Artemis program, which is currently focused on lunar exploration. While progress has been described as slow, the program achieved a successful human crewed mission earlier this year. These lunar missions are intended to serve as preparation for the agency’s long-term goal of sending astronauts to the Red Planet.
Blue Origin is not new to the agency’s supply chain, having secured a contract to build lunar landers at the start of this year. However, the company’s current trajectory is complicated by recent setbacks in its launch capabilities.
In May, the company’s New Glenn rocket program suffered a launchpad explosion. There is currently a discrepancy regarding the timeline for repairs, with Blue Origin’s CEO claiming the launchpad would be operational by the end of 2026. In contrast, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has projected the facility will remain out of commission until 2028.
The contract represents a significant financial commitment for the agency, though the exact final cost is not fixed, with the value described as potentially reaching the $700 million mark. The project underscores the increasing reliance on private sector partners to build the infrastructure required for deep space exploration.
