Blaze overturn Cardiff’s two leads to claim Challenge Cup win
Coventry recovered twice at Skydome Arena before Carson Musser’s late third-period goal secured a 3-2 victory over Cardiff Devils.
Coventry Blaze came from behind twice to defeat Cardiff Devils 3-2 in the Challenge Cup at Skydome Arena, with Carson Musser scoring the winner with just over four minutes remaining.
Cardiff opened the scoring through Bayley Harewood, who registered his first Elite League goal. Griffin Ness equalised for Coventry before the end of the opening period.
Kohen Olischefski restored Cardiff’s advantage in the second period, but the Devils lost forward Riley Brandt after a fighting incident. Brandt was ejected and received a major penalty, according to the match report published by Yahoo Sports.
Ryan Richardson brought Coventry level with a power-play goal midway through the third period. Musser then completed the comeback to give the Blaze their first result after a 6-0 defeat by Sheffield Steelers in their opening match, played 24 hours earlier.
Cardiff had begun their campaign with a 3-1 win over Guildford Flames. Devils head coach Paul Thompson said his side had faced difficult ice conditions and had failed to take important chances, while acknowledging Coventry’s fightback.
