Belichick points to missed chances after North Carolina surrender lead to Clemson

North Carolina coach Bill Belichick has pointed to a breakdown in execution after Clemson overturned a 17-3 lead to win 28-20.

Clemson outscored the Tar Heels 22-3 in the second half, turning a closely contested game into a defeat for North Carolina. Belichick credited Clemson with making the more important plays during the final eight minutes.

The coach identified missed offensive opportunities, missed tackles and several long runs as key factors. North Carolina also failed to convert some chances in the red zone after running the ball consistently early in the game.

A weather delay of more than two hours interrupted the contest while North Carolina held the lead and possession. The Tar Heels’ drive stalled after play resumed and produced only a field goal, before Clemson scored two touchdowns.

Belichick said Clemson used varied pressures and an odd defensive front, while also acknowledging contributions from quarterback Tait Reynolds. He said North Carolina needed to retain the aspects of its performance that worked and improve across the team.
