NBA legend Charles Barkley has outlined a stringent path for LeBron James to cement his status as the greatest basketball player of all time, stating that the veteran forward must secure back-to-back championships with the Philadelphia 76ers to surpass Michael Jordan. Speaking on The Stephen A. Smith Show, Barkley criticised James for what he described as a consistent pattern of assembling star-heavy rosters, a tactic he argues has defined James’ career across Miami, Cleveland, and Los Angeles.

Barkley noted that James’ recent move from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Sixers continues this trend of stacking teams, a decision that places a significant target on the franchise. According to Barkley, the move creates an immediate expectation that the Sixers must at least reach the NBA finals, effectively putting a bullseye on the club’s back. He maintained that while he retains his criticism of James’ team-building approach, the outcome of this specific stint will determine his historical standing.

The legend emphasised that the challenge is not merely about winning a single title, but sustaining excellence over a prolonged period. Barkley stated that if James wins two consecutive championships and retires at the age of 44 or 45, he would finally concede that James is the greatest to ever play the game.
