Charles Barkley explains how LeBron James can earn GOAT status after shocking Sixers move
NBA legend argues back-to-back titles are the only path to surpassing Michael Jordan

NBA legend Charles Barkley has outlined a stringent path for LeBron James to cement his status as the greatest basketball player of all time, stating that the veteran forward must secure back-to-back championships with the Philadelphia 76ers to surpass Michael Jordan. Speaking on The Stephen A. Smith Show, Barkley criticised James for what he described as a consistent pattern of assembling star-heavy rosters, a tactic he argues has defined James’ career across Miami, Cleveland, and Los Angeles.

Barkley noted that James’ recent move from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Sixers continues this trend of stacking teams, a decision that places a significant target on the franchise. According to Barkley, the move creates an immediate expectation that the Sixers must at least reach the NBA finals, effectively putting a bullseye on the club’s back. He maintained that while he retains his criticism of James’ team-building approach, the outcome of this specific stint will determine his historical standing.

The legend emphasised that the challenge is not merely about winning a single title, but sustaining excellence over a prolonged period. Barkley stated that if James wins two consecutive championships and retires at the age of 44 or 45, he would finally concede that James is the greatest to ever play the game. However, he cautioned that achieving this feat at that stage of his career requires James to remain healthy throughout the long NBA season.

The Sixers’ reported starting lineup features James alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and VJ Edgecombe. Analysts have described this roster configuration as a strategic gamble by the front office, which is banking on the availability of star centre Joel Embiid to secure a title. The move represents a calculated risk, betting on the synergy of a star-studded squad to overcome the challenges associated with an ageing superstar and injury concerns.

While the basketball community debates the merits of the roster, local athletes have welcomed James to the city. Philadelphia Phillies stars have acknowledged the demanding nature of the local sports fanbase but agreed that James is well-equipped to handle the pressure, citing his recent experience in the large Los Angeles market. With the Phillies, 76ers, Eagles, and Flyers all making the postseason, the city is currently in a strong sporting position, though the Sixers’ championship hopes rest heavily on James’ ability to deliver.
