Balogun admits ‘outside noise’ disrupted US squad after FIFA suspends red card ban
US striker Folarin Balogun acknowledged the controversy surrounding his reinstatement for the World Cup round-of-16 clash, as critics argue the decision undermined tournament integrity.

US striker Folarin Balogun has admitted that the controversy surrounding his participation in the World Cup round-of-16 match against Belgium created significant distraction for the national squad. Balogun played in the 1-4 defeat after FIFA suspended a one-match ban triggered by a red card in the previous round, a decision made following a direct request from US President Donald Trump to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The red card was issued during the USA’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina after Balogun stepped awkwardly on the ankle of opponent Tarik Muharemovic. Under standard regulations, this incident resulted in an automatic one-game suspension. However, FIFA announced the suspension of the ban for a one-year probationary period after the US president urged a review of the disciplinary ruling.
Balogun provided his first public comments on the incident in an interview with CBS Mornings, acknowledging that he anticipated the backlash. "My initial reaction was I was happy to be back in the team. But when I kind of started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy," he said. He described the moment the news broke on the team bus as "intense," noting that teammates were "screaming and shouting" before the squad travelled to the practice field.
The decision to overturn the ban drew immediate condemnation from across the football world. Belgium’s football association, UEFA, former FIFA officials, and numerous players argued that the intervention undermined the integrity of the tournament. Critics, including a former FIFA boss, accused the governing body of bending its own rules to appease political pressure from Washington.
Despite scoring three goals in the tournament prior to the Belgium match, Balogun struggled to influence the game during the 1-4 loss. He conceded that avoiding the "outside noise" was difficult, though he maintained that the squad remained professional. The incident highlights the growing tension between political influence and sporting governance in international football.
