Athletic Club defeated Atlético Madrid 3–0 at San Mamés in Bilbao on 5 September, handing Diego Simeone’s side their first reported loss of the 2026/27 season.

Yahoo Sports’ analysis described Atlético’s performance as a return to problems seen over the previous two seasons, citing a lack of intensity away from home, missed first-half chances and defensive vulnerability.

The analysis said Atlético’s attack became concentrated on the right side, leaving Ademola Lookman isolated on the left. Lookman was reportedly expected to create opportunities against an organised Athletic defence without sufficient support or combination play.

Atlético conceded their second goal immediately after half-time and then capitulated, according to the analysis. The result has raised questions about whether the club’s tactical balance and defensive structure have improved from previous campaigns.

The defeat came as Atlético were reported to be preparing for a UEFA Champions League match at Anfield the following Wednesday. Exact goal timings, line-ups and match statistics were not provided in the source material.
