Astros’ cautious rotation strategy puts bullpen under pressure

The Houston Astros are managing Cristian Javier and Ethan Pecko cautiously, with both pitchers generally being removed before facing opposing line-ups for a third time. The approach is testing a bullpen already operating below full capacity, according to Yahoo Sports.

Pecko was taken out in the fifth inning against Arizona after consecutive hits put a potential tying run on base. The decision highlighted the strain created when Houston’s shorter starts require additional relief innings.

Javier has faced no more than 19 batters in each of his past four outings, including one bulk-relief appearance. He worked five innings on Friday, allowing one run on one hit and striking out eight, but was replaced in the sixth despite having thrown 79 pitches.

Hunter Brown, Peter Lambert and Hayden Wesneski are being relied on to work deeper into games and limit the workload on the relief corps. Ronel Blanco was also recalled from Triple-A for a spot start and pitched four innings.

Steven Okert’s hamstring injury has reduced the bullpen’s depth, leaving Houston effectively with about seven available relievers. The Astros are completing a 13-day playing stretch on Sunday, after which the schedule may offer greater flexibility in structuring the rotation and roster.

The strategy comes with Houston protecting a three-game division lead and 19 games left in the regular season. Whether brief starts in two-fifths of the rotation can be sustained remains unresolved.
