Arsenal secure Ezri Konsa in £55m move from Aston Villa
The Premier League champions have addressed their defensive depth by signing the 28-year-old England international on a four-year deal.
Arsenal have completed the £55m signing of England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, a move that addresses significant gaps in the title holders’ backline. The 28-year-old has agreed to a four-year contract with an option for a further year, with the deal including up to £4m in add-ons for Villa. The clubs reached an agreement on Wednesday after weeks of negotiation regarding the player’s valuation.
The transfer is a strategic response to injury concerns at the Emirates. William Saliba is out for an extended period due to a back issue, while Jurrien Timber is sidelined for the opening weeks with a groin problem. With Ben White currently the only fit right-back and 21-year-old Cristhian Mosquera as the sole right-sided centre-back to partner Gabriel Magalhaes, Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta highlighted Konsa’s versatility. Berta noted that Konsa is comfortable in both central defence and at right-back, bringing tactical intelligence and composure to the squad.
Konsa’s arrival follows a successful period at Villa Park, where he made 286 appearances since joining in July 2019. He was a key figure in Villa’s Europa League triumph in May, the club’s first major trophy since 1982, and helped them secure a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League. The defender also featured in every England match at the World Cup, where the team reached the semi-finals and won the bronze medal.
The move was facilitated by Konsa’s interactions with his England teammates at the tournament. The defender revealed he spoke with Arsenal players Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka while in North America. Konsa stated he is "hungry to win" and described joining Arsenal as a proud moment for him and his family, adding that he is looking forward to training with his new teammates.
For Aston Villa, the sale is part of a broader financial restructuring driven by Uefa’s squad cost ratio and the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules. Villa, who have already sold Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, and Lucas Digne this summer, are operating as a selling club to manage their wage bill and recent fines. Konsa’s departure adds to the exodus of players from the squad that won the Europa League in Istanbul.
Arsenal have already invested more than £100m in this transfer window, including the signings of Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis. Konsa had not played in any of Villa’s pre-season games, including their 2-1 defeat by Paris St-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup, as he was given four weeks off by manager Unai Emery following the World Cup.
