Arsenal secure defensive depth with £51m Ezri Konsa signing
The Premier League champions have finalised a four-year deal for the England international to address injury concerns in their back line.
Arsenal have completed the £51 million transfer of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, a move designed to shore up defensive resilience for the Premier League champions. The 28-year-old England international has signed a four-year contract, which includes an option for an additional 12 months, following a successful medical.
The acquisition addresses a critical gap in Arsenal’s squad, as they are currently without William Saliba for an extended period and Jurrien Timber, who is sidelined with a long-term groin problem. Konsa offers versatility across both right-back and centre-back roles, providing Mikel Arteta with a player capable of winning duels—a trait the manager highly values.
According to Sky Sports, the fee represents a compromise between Aston Villa’s initial £60 million demand and Arsenal’s lower offer. The clubs reached an agreement on Thursday, with only official confirmation of the deal remaining to finalise the move.
Konsa becomes Arsenal’s fifth major summer signing, following the arrivals of Piero Hincapié, Illan Meslier, Christos Tzolis, and Bruno Guimarães. The club had also explored a potential move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah, but opted for Konsa, noting that both players possess similar profiles and positional flexibility.
The defender could make his debut against his former club at Villa Park on 31 August. His arrival is seen as a significant step in closing the club’s transfer window for incoming players, although Arsenal are still seeking a forward to complete their squad reinforcement.
