Apple Wallet expands beyond payments with custom passes and digital keys
Engadget outlines six Apple Wallet uses, including reportedly new iOS 27 tools for creating passes and splitting bills.
Apple Wallet is moving further beyond payment cards, boarding passes and tickets, with Engadget highlighting six features available across the platform and reportedly in iOS 27.
The update reportedly allows users to create custom passes from photographs or templates, including barcodes, QR codes, membership numbers, dates and event details. The feature could support passes from services that do not natively integrate with Apple Wallet.
Engadget also reports that Apple Wallet can split a bill through Apple Cash by scanning a receipt. The tool accounts for item quantities, tax and tips, although it does not support outside services such as PayPal or Venmo.
Digital identification is another use, with Wallet supporting eligible US driver’s licences, state IDs and US passports in participating locations. Digital IDs can be used for age or identity checks and at some domestic airport security checkpoints, but physical passports remain required for international travel.
Wallet can also be used for contactless payments on participating public transport systems. Express Mode allows compatible payments without waking or unlocking an iPhone or Apple Watch, while power reserve can keep some transit functions available briefly after the device battery reaches zero.
Other features described by Engadget include compatible home, car and hotel keys, employee badges and student IDs, as well as order tracking through Mail. Availability varies by country, US state, transport system, device and participating provider.
