Antonelli wins Italian Grand Prix from 19th on grid

Kimi Antonelli has won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza for Mercedes after starting 19th on the grid, passing team-mate George Russell with four laps remaining in an incident-packed race.

Russell, who started second, finished runner-up, while Max Verstappen took third for Red Bull. McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri finished fourth and fifth respectively, with Lewis Hamilton sixth.

Antonelli stopped for fresh tyres during a virtual safety car period and recovered a reported 15-second deficit before closing on Russell. The Mercedes drivers repeatedly exchanged positions while fighting for the lead.

The result makes Antonelli the first Italian to win at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966, according to BBC Sport. The broadcaster also reported that the victory was the second-furthest-back grid position from which a driver has won a grand prix, behind John Watson’s 22nd-place start at the 1983 United States Grand Prix West.
