Antonelli tops Dutch GP practice as F1 returns from summer break

Formula 1 has returned from its summer break at the Dutch Grand Prix, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli recording the fastest time in the sole practice session at Zandvoort. The Mercedes driver held a narrow 0.121-second advantage over McLaren’s Lando Norris, setting the tone for a tightly contested Sprint weekend.

George Russell finished third, just 0.125 seconds behind Antonelli, as he seeks to recover from a disappointing run of form prior to the break. The proximity of the top three drivers suggests that the competitive balance established in previous rounds remains intact, with Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari all appearing closely matched at the front of the grid.

Ferrari’s new floor upgrade appeared effective, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Both drivers were within three-tenths of a second of Antonelli, although they set their best lap times earlier in the session, potentially benefiting from a slower track surface.

Red Bull faced challenges in the session, with Max Verstappen finishing 11th and visibly struggling with the balance of his car. This performance adds pressure to the Austrian team ahead of what is expected to be Verstappen’s final home event, as the circuit does not have a contract beyond this year.

A significant driver reshuffle occurred due to Isack Hadjar’s wrist injury, with Liam Lawson replacing him at Red Bull and finishing 14th. Yuki Tsunoda moved to Racing Bulls in Lawson’s absence, completing the session in 17th place.

Sprint Qualifying is scheduled for Friday at 3.30pm, with the Sprint race taking place on Saturday at 11am. Sky Sports F1 analyst Karun Chandhok noted that wind conditions are playing a factor in the tricky environment, but the close timing at the front indicates that teams have maintained their momentum from the pre-break period.
