Anthropologist Challenges Sleep Orthodoxy, Citing Circadian Health Over Duration
The author of The Sleepless Ape argues that modern sleep disorders stem from an evolutionary mismatch with indoor living and artificial lighting, rather than a lack of hours in bed.
Evolutionary anthropologist David Samson, author of The Sleepless Ape, is challenging established medical orthodoxy regarding sleep duration and continuity. Drawing on fieldwork among the Hadza tribe in Tanzania and other small-scale societies, Samson observes that while these communities experience highly fragmented and short-duration sleep, they report high levels of satisfaction. This finding directly contradicts the "Paleo sleep hypothesis," which assumes hunter-gatherer sleep is optimally long and deep, and counters the prevailing view that unbroken rest is essential for health.
Samson identifies the root of modern sleep issues as an evolutionary mismatch caused by indoor living, sedentary lifestyles, and artificial lighting. He argues that modern humans are denied crucial environmental cues, such as natural light and temperature variations, which are necessary for robust circadian function. Unlike the Hadza, who exhibit higher amplitude circadian rhythms, populations in the global north often suffer from disrupted biological clocks due to exposure to blue-wave light from screens and energy-efficient glass that blocks full-spectrum light.
The researcher critiques the "lie-down and die" model of sleep, which posits that eight hours of continuous rest is biologically mandatory. Samson traces this expectation to post-industrial labour negotiations rather than evolutionary biology, noting that unions historically argued for a third of the day to be set aside for rest. He suggests that this rigid framework discourages more dynamic, polyphasic sleep patterns and creates unnecessary anxiety around sleep efficiency, which averages 88 per cent in the global north compared to 74 per cent in small-scale off-grid societies.
Despite lower efficiency, the Hadza and similar groups maintain high sleep satisfaction due to strong circadian alignment and social buffering. Samson notes that sleep scientists are increasingly recognising the deep interconnection between sleep and chronobiology. He argues that six and a half hours of sleep with poor circadian function is fundamentally different from the same duration with strong circadian regulation, suggesting that optimising light and temperature exposure is more critical for health than forcing longer sleep durations.
Samson warns against genetic engineering to reduce human sleep needs, citing the vital roles of slow-wave and REM sleep in immune function and emotional regulation. Instead, he advocates for a "sleep enlightenment" where individuals prioritise circadian cues. This includes spending a minimum of 15 per cent of waking hours outdoors, anchoring mornings with full-spectrum light, and avoiding blue light after sundown. Such adjustments, he argues, can restore natural sleep patterns without requiring a return to pre-industrial living conditions.
