GrapheneOS to expand to Motorola flagships in 2027, citing security and update requirements
The developer behind the hardened Android distribution announced its initial entry into the Motorola ecosystem will occur next year, focusing on devices that meet stricter security and longevity standards.
GrapheneOS has confirmed that its initial support for Motorola devices is scheduled to launch in 2027. The operating system specialist will begin with flagship models, which the developer describes as offering higher-end hardware than current Pixel devices, albeit at a higher price point. This move marks a significant expansion for the security-focused Android distribution, which has historically been primarily associated with Google’s Pixel line.
The rollout strategy prioritises devices with robust security architectures. According to the announcement, the latest Snapdragon flagship processors provide the necessary security features required by GrapheneOS. Consequently, the initial devices will leverage these advanced chipsets to ensure the highest level of system integrity and protection for users.
Support for lower-end Motorola devices will face delays as the platform seeks to meet its stringent security requirements. The developer attributed this timeline to limitations in how Qualcomm handles security features in its non-flagship chips. These technical constraints mean that entry-level and mid-range models will require additional time to achieve compatibility with the GrapheneOS security standards.
