Startup secures federal funding and state incentives for 2028 production facility

Battery materials startup Anthro Energy has broken ground on a new manufacturing facility in Louisville, Kentucky, designed to produce electrolytes for solid-state batteries. Scheduled to commence operations in 2028, the plant is expected to generate sufficient materials for more than 300,000 electric vehicles annually, addressing a critical gap in the US supply chain.

The project is positioned to provide a domestic, China-free source of battery materials for US manufacturers seeking to avoid dependencies on foreign entities of concern. David Mackanic, co-founder and chief executive of Anthro Energy, stated that the facility will serve high-specification domestic customers within an emerging ecosystem that requires a reliable, FEOC-free supply of electrolytes.

To finance the construction, Anthro Energy secured a $24.9 million award from the US Department of Energy under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, alongside $18.4 million in investment tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act. The state of Kentucky contributed an additional $2.3 million in tax incentives, contingent on the creation of 110 permanent jobs at the site.

Mackanic highlighted the strategic location of the Louisville plant, noting that it allows access to 70 per cent of existing US battery production facilities within a 12-hour drive. The facility will initially produce a range of electrolytes, with plans to eventually dedicate a significant portion of output to Anthro’s proprietary polymer, Proteus, which is designed to integrate into existing production lines with minimal adjustments.

Solid-state batteries are widely regarded as a holy grail in the industry due to their potential to increase energy density and eliminate the fire risks associated with flammable liquid electrolytes. Anthro’s manufacturing process involves flowing the electrolyte into cells as a liquid before it firms up, a method that Mackanic claims results in cells 10 to 15 times stronger than those using traditional liquid electrolytes.

While Chinese companies are reportedly targeting 2027 for the start of trial production of solid-state batteries, US manufacturers have struggled to find cost-effective methods for durable, large-scale manufacturing. Anthro Energy aims to overcome the industry’s scaling challenges, with federal funding intended to help the startup navigate the transition from small-scale development to commercial production.
