The Anbernic RG SP looks like an awesome update to one of the most iconic Game Boys of all time
Retro handheld maker refines clamshell design with higher resolution display and thinner chassis

Anbernic has announced the RG SP, a new retro gaming handheld designed to replicate the iconic form factor of the Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP. The device represents a refined iteration of the company’s previous clamshell models, the RG 35XXSP released in 2024 and the RG 34XXSP from the following year. While the new unit retains the nostalgic aesthetic, it introduces significant hardware updates, including a chassis constructed from 90 per cent new custom-moulded parts.

The handheld features a 3.4-inch IPS display with a resolution of 720 by 480 pixels, offering exactly three times the resolution of the original GBA SP. This increase in pixel density is intended to facilitate sharper upscaling of retro graphics. The physical design has been slimmed down, with a top bezel that is 25 per cent thinner and an overall case that is 10 per cent thinner than its predecessors. The device is powered by an H700 processor and runs a Linux-based operating system, which the company suggests will streamline the process of loading ROMs.

In a move to adhere more closely to the original design template, Anbernic has omitted the analog sticks found on the previous RG 34XXSP. The company noted that this decision was influenced by customer feedback requesting a cleaner interface that firmly positions the device for older retro titles rather than modern emulation needs. The console does, however, retain a microSD card slot and a 3.5mm audio jack, ensuring compatibility with standard storage and audio accessories.

The RG SP will be available in four metallic finishes: silver, black, pink, and teal. These colour options serve as a callback to the original Game Boy Advance SP’s palette, though the device notably excludes the deep metallic blue variant often associated with the classic Nintendo hardware. The rear of the unit features dual hinges that support a wider range of screen angles compared to previous models.

Pricing and release dates have not been confirmed by Anbernic. However, given that the company’s previous models sold for approximately $65 and $67, and considering the global RAM shortage has driven price hikes across the gaming industry, estimates suggest the RG SP will likely cost under $100. The device is expected to arrive later this year.
